Stephen (“Hawthy”) and Roth, our co-founders, realized something was missing from the market. Sustainability was growing in importance but was not yet stylish, and style and comfort rarely coexisted. Women needed a stylish, comfortable, sustainable shoe they could wear all day every day, no matter where their busy lives took them.
Our mission was to create the most stylish, comfortable shoe for today’s on-the-go woman. And do it with low-waste, low-impact materials, hand-assembled for high quality and durability. Hence Rothy’s was born.
A wardrobe staple that goes with pretty much everything. Lightweight comfort. A shoe you’d be happy to keep on all day. In Rothy's style, comfort and versatility coexist in the first sustainable shoe as cute as it is comfortable; look good in your Rothy's and feel good about your Rothy's. That’s something you don’t see every day in fashion.
There’s a comfort that comes from not having shoes on at all. We’re proud to say that we (finally) figured out how recycled plastic water bottles can be transformed into a comfortable knitted shoe that fits like a glove and is soft like a sock. So wear them, walk in them, knock them about. Then throw your Rothy's in the wash (cold water, gentle cycle, gentle detergent), and let them air dry.
We’re not ashamed to say there’s something a little luxurious about Rothy’s. From the sophisticated patterns of the 3D knit upper, to the logo embroidered into the plush removable insole. It’s attainable luxury not untouchable fashion; and it works as well at a day in the office as it does when you’re playing tourist.
The question we asked was, can we make this sophisticated stylish product in a different way? With less waste and more responsible materials? Done and done (and enormously proud). We encourage re-use of our sturdy resealable shipping box. Thanks to Rothy's unique design and 3-D Knit Technology they are machine washable and look new, wash after wash. We encourage giving Rothy's new life when you finally are ready to replace them. Simply send them into our recycling facility and help close the loop in making our planet a better place.
Stephen, or “Hawthy” as he’s known around here, has always opted for the road less traveled (or at least the less obvious). Upon graduation from law school, he traded in his hard-earned degree for a career in investment banking and technology mergers and acquisitions. Making his way from New York to San Francisco, this well-dressed Southern gentleman turned his attention to rapidly growing consumer technologies, helping to shape the industry as we know it today. Happily merging his business acumen with a passion for fashion and design, Stephen is Rothy's CEO. His wife Erin and daughter Bladen are unrelenting Rothy’s product testers and living proof that our shoes can go the distance. His teenage son Carter, on the other hand, is still trying to wrap his head around his dad’s choice of making ladies footwear.
Though about as native San Franciscan as they come, hoodies and hipster wear never enter Roth’s fashion vocabulary. A form and function obsessed designer, he tends toward a clean modern aesthetic. Though he’s traded commodities and run operations at a biotech start-up, Roth is most happy designing prototypes for future Rothy’s silhouettes and experimenting with repurposed materials. His wife Emily and four kids are eager Rothy’s sounding boards and enthusiastic fit models. As cofounder at Hedge Gallery and FOG Art + Design Fair, it's easy to see how his business savvy and keen eye have led him into refreshingly unchartered design territory. Rothy’s couldn’t be a better breeding ground for Roth’s passion and tireless desire to create.
