Behind the design: The Square Mary Jane.

It’s official, there’s a new Mary Jane in town. Joining our original pointed style, our newest square toe option is here to round out your fall wardrobe.

This classic take on the timeless Mary Jane silhouette features a secure yet flexible strap and a square toe. Knit with 100% recycled materials and finished with luxe vegan leather outsoles, these comfortable shoes are the perfect addition to any rotation.

We asked two of the design minds behind The Square Mary Jane to give you an inside look at what makes this silhouette special. Lavion, our lead Product Designer, created the shape and construction. And Kristin, our Technical Designer, came up with the colors and patterns. Together, they made something incredible—if we do say so ourselves. Let’s dive in.

Can you tell us about the design process for The Square Mary Jane?

We are constantly considering new shape profiles and styles we can introduce. The Square Mary Jane was an exciting exploration of how we could innovate and build upon our beautiful square toe flat.

Talk to us about the details. What makes this shoe special and how does it differ from our existing mary jane?

The Square Mary Jane is a stunning silhouette. The strap and toe shape is a noticeable differentiation from our existing Mary Jane shoe. This style takes a more classic approach to the traditional Mary Jane shape.

What was your favorite part about designing this shoe?

I am delighted by the effortless appeal that the design offers. These flats look good with just about any outfit. Plus, they’re crafted to be insanely comfortable.

Can you tell us how you selected color and pattern for this collection? How does the palette differ from the colors of our existing mary jane?

For this collection, we wanted to offer a color palette that felt timeless with a nice range of neutrals as well as an easy-to-wear leopard print. This launch feels richer in color, with the black manjaly outsoles, and more versatile in comparison to our existing Mary Jane, which is more playful and feminine.

If you had to pick a favorite color or pattern, which one would it be and why?

I love the Flame color! The Point in Flame was actually my very first pair of Rothy’s. The color immediately caught my eye in the store and I had to have it. Bringing back one of our best selling colors for this new collection was so much fun.

How are you styling The Square Mary Jane this season?

I will be wearing The Square Mary Jane with everything. I have been counting down the days to this launch and it’s finally here. I’m all about pairing these shoes with long trench coats, slouchy trousers and chunky sweaters.
